Week 05 - Use of Composition

Composition is the building blocks of building a compelling image, it is the layout foundation for all the elements in your scene. All the elements and their positions should be working together to lead the eye of the viewer.

Located on the XDrive:

I have added the write up by Phil Straub on the various composition types and their meaning.

I also have created a Composition Cheat Sheet hand out:

For this weeks assignment you will need the following:

1. Take the provided Maya Kitbash kit that I provided (Created with Worldmachine and ZBrush for terrain and Adobe Medium for the ships and city pieces). The files exist in both canvas (https://webcourses.ucf.edu/courses/1365788/files/folder/CompositionKitBash) and also here on the XDrive (X:\ART 1\2D\DrawingFundamentals_S1_C_005_CompositionAndLayout\ClassLearningContent)

You will be using ALL the elements provided to build an illustration. It is up to you to choose how to arrange the elements on screen to build one of the composition types listed above.

You are free to move, scale, rotate, distort, add to, take away from any of the provided parts. You are encouraged to kitbash/create your own geometry to add to the scene.

(Please make sure to provide a behind the scenes image that calls out how you used the various pieces.)

2. Please use the UE4 mannequin to help establish scale. (Character needs to be posed) You are fee to duplicate and add to the figure as many times as you wish.

3. You are free to use any technique you wish in order to build your final images.

4. Images should be either 3840X2160 or2160X3840 to build either a horizontal or vertical image.

5. Think about the use of value to separate your parts and pieces, think about value as lighting to guide the viewers eye.

6. Image should demonstrate use of foreground, midground and background. (Remember that lighting and atmosphere are tools that help us establish these separations.)
